What is The South Beach Diet?

The South Beach Diet is a special kind of dieting system that is divided into three major phases to help you lose weight in a structured and methodical way.

With so many different diet plans and systems available to try these days, it just gets more confusing as to which one is which and what they all do. This system is designed to be a special kind of dieting system that is divided into three major phases. Each phase consists of a relatively simple diet regime that you must follow.

It also promotes living a healthy lifestyle by combining healthy food with an active lifestyle that includes plenty of fresh air and exercise.

So how does the diet work?

Here is an overview of the diet to give you some idea how it works. We will go into more detail in a later article.

The Phases

This program is made up of three main phases that are designed to jump start your body into losing weight and burning fat. It's done in the initial phase by restricting the food you can eat, then as you move through the phases, to gradually increase the choice of foods until you are at a point where you have learned to eat the right way to maintain a healthy body weight.

South Beach Diet Phase 1

This initial phase lasts just two weeks but is very intensive and is designed to set your body up so that it learns to burn fats to get its energy instead of what it is used to, burning carbs. This phase is based on the Atkins diet concept of removing carbs to force the body to burn fat for energy.

To that end, all carbs are off the menu in this phase and that includes most vegetables and fruit. So you are going to be eating lots of meat, fish and dairy to make up the bulk of your food, with one or two vegetables that are allowed and some nuts and seeds. Herbs and spices are allowed to improve the flavor of your meals.

South Beach Diet Phase 2

This phase is much longer and some low Glycemic Index (GI) carbs are re-introduced into your diet here, including some vegetables and some fruits.

By this time, your body will have switched to burning primarily fats to gain energy and it will continue to do this as the bulk of your food will still be made up of protein and fats with small amounts of carbs.

South Beach Diet Phase 3

This phase is the continuation of the diet where you have taught your body new habits that should stick to ensure a long lasting effect of your eating regimen. You should not put any of the old weight back on as you go through this phase and you will continue eating far more healthily than you ever did before, while keeping carbs fairly low and proteins higher.

The whole idea of this diet is to exercise throughout to help your body raise its metabolism so that it becomes more efficient at burning fats to get its energy. You should expect to lose a lot of weight early on in the program as your body consumes the bulk of its fat store, then the rate of weight lost will reduce over time until you get to the stage where you are maintaining a healthy weight for the long term.
